When should I choose a 785 nm Raman system and when a 1064 nm system?
Choosing between a 785 nm and 1064 nm Raman spectrometer depends mainly on fluorescence sensitivity, sample type, and application needs.
When to use the instrument working on 785nm:
- samples show moderate fluorescence, but not extreme.
- a good balance between Raman signal strength and fluorescence suppression.
- If you need highest posible spectral resolution
- if faster acquisition times and higher sensitivity is needed.
- measurement of biological, pharmaceutical, polymeric, or organic materials.
- if lower cost and compact system design is important (785 nm systems are more common and affordable).
When to use the instrument working on 1064nm:
- samples show strong fluorescence under 785 nm or shorter wavelengths.
- dark, highly colored, or carbon-rich materials (e.g., pigments, inks, soot, polymers) are analyzed.
- if you are satisfied with: Weaker Raman signal, longer integration times, larger and more expensive equipment
- usage of Raman in geology, forensics, art conservation, or archeometry, where fluorescence is a major challenge.
